Similar to the opinion of most, I thought that
belly dance was flashy
costumes, sexy movements, and Middle Eastern music. Imagine my
surprise when I took my first class with Jess Staley in 2006. I
learned that Improvisational Tribal Style, ITS, meant that I would
have to stiffen up my hands, lift my chest, and share the spotlight
with other ladies. ITS also involved embracing and loving yourself
as
you are, regardless of body type, age, dance experience, etc. This
was
just beyond me. I lacked the self-confidence to bare my pudgy belly
and I kept wondering when I would have something I could show off to
the boys. (Some things will never change! Just kidding.) My
enlightenment and complete draw came from a single moment in class
when I followed Jess and caught her eye in the mirror. I felt the
dancers' connection in that moment - knowing that we were moving
together to create something magical - and despite not thinking that
my appearance or movements were perfect, I felt beautiful. I finally
found the appreciation for the earthy, rich movements we had. From
then on, I was hooked. Jess eventually placed me in Vikki's
meticulous
care and direction. Over time, I developed close friendships
(especially so with my fellow class clowns who shall remain
anonymous), became a total zill fanatic, and discovered a new
creative
side with costuming. (I use the term 'creative' loosely, as my
sewing
machine and I are merely civil and do not consider ourselves BFFs.)
The culmination of my time at the studio has been being a part of
Tribal Spirit, which is such a blessing in my life. Sometimes I
wonder
how we get anything done - we are a chatty group of women with great
senses of humor, big hearts, and a love for such a variety of music.
I
owe so much to my wonderful teachers Jess and Vikki. Its difficult
to
have me in class at times but you have taught me to always be a
student and have shaped me as a dancer and woman. I am so grateful
for
my TS teachers Ann and Yael, who have SO much patience with me and
openly invited me into the TS family. I also am grateful for my time
with Denise, who has served as a teacher and big sister, and for my
time with my soul sista T, who shares my giddiness and love for
sushi.
When I'm not dancing, I enjoy long walks on the beach with Michael
Bolton or Bryan Adams playing in the background, comedy shows,
butterflies, and shopping (particularly shoes - you can't see me,
son!).
